Just the Tips: Schoolhouse Rocks...
...but it's pretty pricey. Get the Schoolhouse modern heirloom look for less.
Hi, my name is Lindsey, and I have very expensive taste. Everyone in unison: Hello, Lindsey. Admitting you have a problem is the first step. You could put 10 red plastic cups in front of me, and I will gravitate toward the one that was once used by Jackie Chan and now costs an arm and a leg. Or a kidney. If this bill passes, I can sell my kidney for a $50k tax credit, which might be enough to purchase at least a couple of items on my wish list. When I was in my 20s, if money were no object, I would’ve put the entire Pottery Barn catalog in my home, and I wasn’t the only one.
Now in my 40s, I have a new home design crush: Schoolhouse. I love midcentury modern lines mixed with heirloom and industrial accents infused with pops of primary color. I’m looking for more clean lines and less macrame fringe than my current boho vibe. I no longer wish to copy a page from a catalog or website, and could not afford to even I wanted to, but I’m slowly adding Schoolhouse-esque accents that don’t make me nauseous when I “add to cart.” Some of these “looks for less” are so similar, I had to check twice when making these graphics. Of course there are others where you’re clearly sacrificing some quality, but for savings that will at least make you think about compromising. If you saved $500 on a clock, just think about all of the lifesaving purchases you could make! Or you could always give to a favorite charity. Or if you want to be an adult about it, you could just save it. Boo.
If you’re like me, you’ve already given up on this narrative and have scrolled down to the good stuff (recipe bloggers, I love you but I always go straight to the recipe). For those who have stuck with me, I will reward you with five minutes of uninterrupted eye contact.
Welcome to Just the Tips, a Raveled subsection where I share information that could actually prove useful. This time it’s home design on a budget, next time it could be “what to do if your child pulls a used condom out of the sandbox.”
* Dunelm is a British home goods/furniture store that’s new on my radar. They don’t appear to sell to the U.S. yet, but their stuff is so cute and reasonable-but-not-cheap. Fingers crossed they’ll ship across the pond soon!
